According to a recent survey conducted by caring.com, there has been an increased understanding among people about the importance of having essential estate planning documents like Wills, Living Wills, and Powers of Attorney, following the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, despite this awareness, a staggering 67% of the 2600+ surveyed individuals admitted to not having any kind of estate plan in place.
So, why is this the case?
The survey revealed that 40% of respondents cited procrastination as the primary reason for not having an estate plan. In simple terms, they just haven’t taken the necessary steps to create one. Additionally, 33% believed they didn’t possess enough assets to warrant a Will, while others expressed concerns about the costs associated with preparing the documents or simply not knowing where to begin.
Now, it’s important to ask yourself: Are you part of the 67% or the 33%?
If you find yourself among the 67% who haven’t yet established an estate plan, it’s important to note that although you may be in the majority, there are significant risks involved. Without a proper plan, your assets may be subjected to probate, or if you don’t have a Will, the court will distribute your assets based on legal guidelines. Furthermore, in the event of incapacitation, decisions regarding your medical care may be made by others since your wishes won’t be documented.
